Bread and Roses: A Century-Old Festival—Do You Really Know Its Origins?
March has arrived, and social media feeds are flooded with “Happy Goddess’ Day,” “Happy Queen’s Day,” while e-commerce platforms are overwhelmed with promotions—as if this day is merely about consumption and gifts.
But do you know?Over a century ago, when this day was born, women took to the streets, chanting not “shop till you drop,” but “Bread and Roses.”
A March That Changed History
The story begins on March 8, 1857, in New York City.
Female garment and textile workers took to the streets. What were their working conditions like? They worked up to 12 hours a day for pitifully low wages, with no guarantee of basic safety.
They protested, demanding shorter working hours, better pay, and the right to vote. But the march was quickly dispersed by police.
Fifty-one years later, on March 8, 1908, 15,000 women marched again in New York City. This time, their slogan echoed through history:“Bread and Roses”
Bread symbolized economic security.
Roses symbolized a dignified life.
All they wanted was to live with dignity, as human beings.
A Proposal, A Festival
In 1910, at the Second International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark,a German women’s leader named Clara Zetkin proposed:establish an International Women’s Day to unite working women worldwide and fight for equal rights.
More than 100 delegates from 17 countries supported the proposal.
On March 19, 1911, over 1 million women in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and other countries gathered to celebrate the first International Women’s Day.
On March 8, 1917 (February 23 in the Russian calendar), women workers in Petrograd, Russia, went on strike and marched, demanding “Bread and Peace.”Four days later, the Tsar was forced to abdicate, and the Provisional Government granted women the right to vote.
To commemorate this heroic struggle, the Second International Communist Women’s Conference in 1921 officially designated:March 8 as International Working Women’s Day.
When It Came to China
On the morning of March 8, 1924, in Guangzhou,China held its first public event commemorating International Women’s Day.The chairwoman was He Xiangning.
From the stage, she denounced the sufferings of women under imperialism and feudalism, urging them to resolutely take the path of “overthrowing feudalism and imperialism, and striving for women’s liberation.”
Slogans raised at the conference included:
Overthrow feudalism! Overthrow imperialism!
Protect child laborers and pregnant women!
Abolish child brides, polygamy, and prostitution!
Strive for women’s liberation!
He Xiangning later wrote:
“Liberation” is the urgent demand of hundreds of millions of women. For years, they had found no way out.On March 8, 1924, the demands of Chinese women were put forward comprehensively for the first time.
In December 1949, the Government Administration Council of the Central People’s Government officially designated:March 8 as Women’s Day.
Why “Women,” Not “Goddess”?
You may have noticed that many people today dislike being called “women”and prefer “goddess” or “queen.”
But do you know? The word “women” carries the rights won through blood and sweat by countless pioneering women over a century.
It is not derogatory—it is glorious.
The original purpose of International Women’s Day was never about receiving gifts or praise. It was to honor women who fought for equalityand to remind us:The right to vote, education, work, and equal pay that women enjoy today were all earned through struggle.
As the historic slogan goes:Give us bread, and give us roses too.
Bread is the right to survive.Roses is the dignity to live.
